I’m having yet another very hard day and I think it would help to talk  a little about Nate. A lot of you probably know that Nate had seizures, but some of you may not. He had overcome so much in his life before h1n1 took him.

Nate brightened my life everyday,  and anyone who knew him would say the same thing.

On March 10,2005, after a very long and difficult  labor and  nearly  a c-section, Nate  was born with the cord wrapped around his neck twice. He really had to be worked up to cry and turn pink.  I was instantly in love.

When he was 6 months old, 2 days after his immunization shots, Nate started having seizures. We were sitting at my son’s soccer game, and he just out of the blue fell asleep. I thought he must have been tired. After this happening several times over the course of the day, I took him to the ER to learn it was in fact seizures.  When I finally got in to see the pediatric neuro, we learned that Nate was having hundreds of seizures a day. He was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms.  After a couple of medicines, the neuro decided it was time for something else.  She put him on ACTH which is a steroid therapy. I had to give him 2 steroid shots a day. This was a horrible thing for a mother to have to do. We watched him balloon up over the next month, but the seizures continued. After the steroid therapy, we tried another med. The siezures went away! I remember praying every day that this was it, he was finally going to have a normal life.

After 3 months, the seizures returned.  We were heartbroken.  The infantile spasms were gone, but he continued to have seizures every 2-3 days. His seizures lasted anywhere from 8-15 minutes, and were terrifying. We tried a total of 9 medicines, steroids, and a special Ketogenic diet, and nothing worked. After 4 years of seizures, no diagnosis, and seeing 2 world reknown specialists, I had finally accepted that he would always have seizures.

The seizures caused a lot of problems in Nate’s life. He didn’t sit up until he was 1, walked when he was 2 1/2, and finally had started speaking when he was 4. None of this mattered to Nate. It never stopped him from enjoying life. He was the happiest, most carefree little boy I’ve ever known.  He would always have a smile on his face, and was always ready to learn something new.  I learned so much from him. His laughter melted my heart everyday. Life will never be the same without him.
