I’m having yet another very hard day and I think it would help to talk a little about Nate. A lot of you probably know that Nate had seizures, but some of you may not. He had overcome so much in his life before h1n1 took him.
Nate brightened my life everyday, and anyone who knew him would say the same thing.
On March 10,2005, after a very long and difficult labor and nearly a c-section, Nate was born with the cord wrapped around his neck twice. He really had to be worked up to cry and turn pink. I was instantly in love.
When he was 6 months old, 2 days after his immunization shots, Nate started having seizures. We were sitting at my son’s soccer game, and he just out of the blue fell asleep. I thought he must have been tired. After this happening several times over the course of the day, I took him to the ER to learn it was in fact seizures. When I finally got in to see the pediatric neuro, we learned that Nate was having hundreds of seizures a day. He was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms. After a couple of medicines, the neuro decided it was time for something else. She put him on ACTH which is a steroid therapy. I had to give him 2 steroid shots a day. This was a horrible thing for a mother to have to do. We watched him balloon up over the next month, but the seizures continued. After the steroid therapy, we tried another med. The siezures went away! I remember praying every day that this was it, he was finally going to have a normal life.
After 3 months, the seizures returned. We were heartbroken. The infantile spasms were gone, but he continued to have seizures every 2-3 days. His seizures lasted anywhere from 8-15 minutes, and were terrifying. We tried a total of 9 medicines, steroids, and a special Ketogenic diet, and nothing worked. After 4 years of seizures, no diagnosis, and seeing 2 world reknown specialists, I had finally accepted that he would always have seizures.
The seizures caused a lot of problems in Nate’s life. He didn’t sit up until he was 1, walked when he was 2 1/2, and finally had started speaking when he was 4. None of this mattered to Nate. It never stopped him from enjoying life. He was the happiest, most carefree little boy I’ve ever known. He would always have a smile on his face, and was always ready to learn something new. I learned so much from him. His laughter melted my heart everyday. Life will never be the same without him.

Jackie: We have some things in common... my first son was very premature and very sick, so he had tons of developmental delays and a laundry list of "things he'll never do" that was issued to me by his doctors in the NICU, but it was as if God put something deep in his heart that just made him radiate joy (even while on a feeding tube and getting every therapy imaginable to try to catch up developmentally). I look at the pictures of your Nate and see a little bit of the same spark I see in my Jon's eyes and his smile... I have and continue to pray for you, and I am touched by this little boy I never knew and the mom that not only loves and cherishes him, but also shares him with us...
Christine: Well, the tears are running down my face, as I can feel your pain as though it were my own. My daughter Gabrielle had RSV when she was 3 months old and I spent 2 weeks in the hospital with her (I refused to leave). I have never prayed as much in my entire life as I did in those 2 weeks. Now if she gets a cough I am off to the Dr.!! I sat here trying to figure out what to write... here is what I came up with. Nate is with you and he will always be with you, he has not left you as he is right beside you....
Denise: I think EVERY day has to be hard. Prayers for you and your family. I can't even image what you must be going through.

JoJo Luk: I'm deeply moved by your story of Nate (my 2nd son's name is Nathan & we call him Nate, too) and I'm a mother of 3 young boys myself...I too have just began to experience the same mysterious seizures that is suddenly occuring to my youngest baby of 18 mos old. This pass May he had almost life threatening seizure that left him stop breathing for over 5 minutes! I witnessed him freezed, seizured and then turned purple from not being able to breathe! It was the most sickening feeling that I've ever had in my life!! After getting no diagnosis he was sent home after 2 days in hospital. Then just this past week (5 mos after the first time) he seizured again in the care of my mom when I was away at a shooting session 2 hours drive away...needless to say my heart just stopped and my world spinned...he again stopped breathing for a few minutes and again we were given no real solid diagnosis. These experience left me so worried to my stomach & I wonder if it'll lead to something more awful like one day loosing him! I'm lost and I'm scared to death!!! I look at him everyday, holding him tightly, my heart tears apart as I'm fearing that I may not be able to hold him one of these days. We were told that this is really normal situations when a child with a high fever to seizure and therefore we shouldn't worry - how could we NOT!! They called it "Feboral Seizure" and I'm not sure I'm taking this diagnosis.. Anyhow, I do feel your pain and can tell you that I totally understand your needs to talk about him because talking about him is the best therapy you can do for yourself...never bottle your pain and feelings inside to yourself...please continue to think about him and remembering him will give you strength....I will also pray for you and your family.
